Throughout my teens, I struggled with my weight. I could not figure out how to actually sustain a lifestyle that would consistently support my own good health and physical fitness. I didn’t like my waistline, I didn’t like how I looked and, most importantly, I didn’t feel good about my body or myself.
After college, my weight began to fluctuate even more. I attended medical school, I learned of the different approaches, skills and treatments and I began to see a pattern with how people received care. At the same time, I also saw a pattern with my own behaviors and what I would need to truly heal.
Little did I know that “doctor, heal thyself” was waiting for me all along. I had been wrestling with my health, my fitness and my physique my entire life while pretending it didn’t matter. And then I learned about the lack of separation between mind and body. I had a dysfunctional relationship with food, almost like an addiction, and I couldn’t seem to figure out how to break the spell and rid myself of this curse that was turning out to be a lifelong struggle. For some people this struggle is 5 or 10 pounds. For others it’s 50 or 100 pounds. I was somewhere in the middle.
For as long as I could remember, I had been on that roller coaster ride with my weight. And so I began searching for the answer over the past few years. In September 2013, I started to sense that this solution was within my grasp. Each month until the end of the year, I lost 5 pounds only to lose my grip and find myself right back up where I started, again and again.
And then it happened.
New Year’s came and went. People made and broke their resolutions right before my eyes and I thought, “Enough is enough.” Finally, I knew what had to be done. I found someone willing to listen, I told them what I needed to succeed and I asked them to coach me and hold me accountable through the process.
As soon as I began, I had self-control in a way I never thought possible. I knew that I could hide from myself but if I had a co-pilot riding shotgun with me all day long, I couldn’t fail. I mindlessly reached for some candy and my hand jerked back, knowing that I would have to tell my coach. I was in disbelief.
Later that day, I was up in the mountains skiing. At this particular resort, they serve warm chocolate chip cookies as you exit the slopes at the end of the day. I popped out of my skis, walked up to the happy woman wearing a chef’s hat, looked at the tray full of cookies and knew for sure what I had suspected all day: it works! I asked her if I could take her picture instead of taking a cookie, I let the camera on my phone eat the cookie instead and texted the photo off to my new coach and proclaimed, “NOT EATEN: a bunch of chocolate chip cookies!” And that is what we call Phase I: Onboarding!
For the next 10 weeks, I was a machine and completely focused. Of course, it had its ups and downs, but I progressively climbed downward toward my ideal weight until I got there. My eating habits and my exercise routine completely transformed. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing on my scale. I had done it. I achieved my goal! But was it going to last? Was I going to keep this up long-term, bounce back up or end up even worse than where I started?
The true measure of success was going to be whether or not I could maintain my weight and my new lifestyle. As I share my story with you, I can say with complete confidence that my life is forever changed and that the new me is here to stay. I have maintained my goals and, where hanging on for dear life in the past was virtually impossible, holding steady at my goal weight has never been so much fun. My old best has become my new worst. I’m continually developing muscle mass and a stronger core, needing to increase my weight range to accommodate the additional muscle I’ve never before had. It’s a thrill to gain weight for the first time in my life in a healthy way!
I was the first turtle in training, I became a coach to others and now it is my wish to spread the word, pay it forward and help everyone that wants to get on board to help themselves and others in the process. Where formerly, I was only able to reach and help a limited amount of people in my practice, I now feel that together we can reach an endless amount of people and the sky’s the limit.
